What we need
We are seeking an experienced Staff Software Engineer to join our team. This is a key leadership role for a hands-on engineer who will drive technical excellence, shape our architectural vision, and mentor our engineering talent. While this role is primarily focused on backend development, a strong understanding and capability across the full stack are essential.
This is a remote position, but we are only looking for candidates eligible to work in the UK. English fluency is essential.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architectural design and technical direction for key initiatives.
- Oversee and continuously improve our software development processes, methodologies, and standards.
- Collaborate with and manage a distributed team of engineers.
- Develop our frontend applications (Svelte + TypeScript).
- Expand our backend services (Node.js + TypeScript).
- Contribute to our site reliability engineering (SRE) efforts, focusing on system reliability, performance, and monitoring.
- Write clean and maintainable TypeScript, continuing to grow the quality of the codebase
- Help maintain existing features, work with the customer success team to fix bugs, and keep our users happy.
- As Budibase is open source, you’ll work with the community and contribute publicly
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional experience developing modern web applications
- A minimum of 2+ years working with TypeScript
- Experience in architecting new features, creating new APIs, and developing new integrations.
- Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases
- Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Experience in a startup or high-growth environment
- Capable of having technical discussions at the right level of abstraction

- Experience working with Terraform and Kubernetes
- A strong desire to improve developer experience, improve observability, and make other engineers’ lives easier
- Experience building AI-powered features, using LLMs, RAG, and designing agentic systems
- Background as a site reliability engineer.
- Previous experience in a team lead role.
