Main purpose of job
To be responsible through the Senior Resource Advisor to the Waste Manager (Education and Business Development), working as part of a team to deliver the goals of the Education and Business Development Unit through the efficient and effective delivery of a waste minimisation advice and recycling awareness service to the city.
Assist in improving the recycling and waste management habits of householders and the business community through providing advice and information on recycling, environmental sustainability and green issues through ‘door-stepping’ and other awareness raising initiatives.
Assist in assessing the effectiveness of the waste education campaign through undertaking surveys, data collection and monitoring, and undertake follow up pre-enforcement or promotion action as required.
Summary of responsibilities and personal duties
1. To promote recycling, re-use and waste minimisation through providing door step advice and education to householders and the business community to increase participation rates in the city’s recycling schemes.
2. To support the introduction of new recycling schemes and initiatives through raising awareness of environmental sustainability and green issues amongst households and the business community.
3. To carry out a programme of work as identified by the Senior Resource Advisor.
4. To work closely with the Waste Education and Promotion Officers and other officers involved to ensure the smooth running and delivery of all waste promotion events.
5. To undertake participation surveys and to gather a range of information relating to household and commercial recycling schemes, including participation and contamination rate data as directed.
6. To assist with the compilation and assessment of data, the monitoring of poorly performing recycling areas and the provision of additional advice, education or pre-enforcement action as directed.
7. To assist with the delivery of educational and promotional events such as the annual waste fair, schools events, summer schemes and shopper awareness days and other events.
8. To undertake direct marketing activities on behalf of other environmental bodies as and when required.
9. To drive as and when required any shared vehicles and ensure they are kept in a clean and roadworthy condition.
10. To ensure that all public enquiries are dealt with in a courteous and friendly manner and in accordance with the council’s customer service standards.
11. To carry out projects in an efficient and effective manner as directed by the Waste Manager (Education and Business Development) in order to achieve required performance standards.
12. To carry out the duties of the post in such a way as to protect and enhance the reputation and public profile of the city council.
13. To undertake such other duties as may from time to time be required.
Driving licence and experience
Applicants must, as at the closing date for receipt of application forms:
* have a full, current driving licence which enables them to drive in Northern Ireland, or have access to a form of transport which enables them to carry out the duties of the post in full[1]; and
* be able to demonstrate on the application form, by providing personal and specific examples, at least one year’s relevant work experience of:
1. dealing with members of the public as part of their daily duties in a face-to-face environment;
2. compiling and analysing service information; and
3. undertaking marketing and promotional activities and events.
