Each Positive Behaviour Support Lead will work as part of a dedicated team to provide a consistently high quality active support service within a caring environment, ensuring that both service users and staff are treated with dignity and respect. In Lisburn PBS, the service user is at the centre of everything that we do, therefore the role of PBS lead is very bespoke to the service users needs. The PBS lead role is very much hands on, where the lead will have a high level of active engagement with service users in all areas of their daily lives. In conjunction with Positive behaviour support practitioners, this will include personal care, medication management and administration, meal preparation, cleaning and laundry, money management, activity planning, facilitating appointments, assisting with family visits and setting future goals.

Service users are often at different levels of independence with these skills and tasks. The PBS lead will model and provide advice on approaches on a daily basis to quality assure practitioner application of bespoke PBS plans and consistency in care.

Staff ratios are dependent on level of need and associated support required. Ranging from 1:1 to 3:1.

Through a key worker system, the use of positive behaviour methodologies and through liaising with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to include- Intensive Support Service, social worker, speech and language therapist and a clinical Psychologist. The Positive Behaviour Support Leads will be responsible for overseeing programmes of support and coordinating the delivery of these by fully immersing themselves in their application and actively supporting the team of Positive Behavioural Support Practitioners and service users on a daily basis. You will be champions in the positive behaviour support approach, and Praxis Care will support you to attain competence through training and formal qualifications and experience and expect that you contribute to the dissemination of understanding of PBS across the organisation.

About The Role

Key Accountabilities:

  • To support the manager with the day to day operational running of the scheme including rota management and creation, supervison and appraisal of staff
  • To provide active support in relation to the physical, emotional and personal needs of Service Users, ensuring that work within the scheme is Service User focussed and upholds the principles of respect, privacy, dignity, fulfilment, independence and choice.
  • To plan, co-ordinate and implement the safe transition of new Service Users into the service and community where necessary in consultation with the MDT.
  • To liaise with Service User families and relevant members of multi-disciplinary teams, community groups and voluntary bodies with the aim of promoting the Service User needs.
  • To coordinate the planning, development and implementation of individual care and support plans to enhance and maximise the capabilities and independence of the Service Users.
  • In consultation with the MDT and management, PBS leads will identify specific areas of data collection that are required, agree how this data will be gathered, collated and share this information with the MDT for analysis as required, and utilise to inform decision making in relation to the effectiveness of current PBS plans and approaches.
  • To ensure that adequate records are created and maintained and necessary reports, including untoward/critical incidents are produced and reported in line with Organisational policy and statutory requirements. This will include facilitating and participating in debriefs on an individual and group basis.
  • To coordinate ongoing assessments and reviews in a regular and systematic basis through the completion of suitable assessment models.
  • To take the lead in challenging and complex situations and ensure the safety of service users and staff through the appropriate management of violence and aggression.
  • To have a full working knowledge of positive behavioural support and systems theory and to be able to exercise judgement in identifying and addressing complex behaviours where a range of options and the implications of each of these have to be considered.
  • To act in the best interests of the Service User at all times, including taking timely action if the service users wellbeing is jeopardised. This includes having a working knowledge of Safeguarding procedure and acting accordingly if concerns arise.
  • To ensure that medication is held, stored and administered in accordance with Praxis Cares Medication Policy and current statutory and legislative procedure and provide advice which contributes to the care, wellbeing and education of the Service User, including health promotion
  • To provide effective leadership, supervision and management to a team of Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners, including monitoring of adherence to service user care and support plans, bespoke PBS plans, reflective practice, time keeping, attendance and the participation in any capability, disciplinary and grievances procedures etc.
  • To complete any mandatory training identified as necessary by the Organisation whilst identifying and addressing personal development opportunities for both the post holder and those managed by the post holder.
  • To actively participate in research and in-house training as required, which may include specialist training to work with individual service users.
  • To complete a vocational or professional qualification as prescribed by the organisation.
  • To participate and speak at conferences and staff development training to ensure that good practice is disseminated appropriately.

  • To carry out all duties of the post in accordance with Praxis Cares rules, regulations and policies
  • To carry out additional duties of the role and all other required duties as and when necessary
  • The service is staffed 24/7. Our leads complete a mixture of both admin shifts and shifts in scheme. Sleepover shifts are also required within the role.
  • All staff are required to transport service users as part of the role and will be required to use their own vehicle and the scheme vehicle when required, providing independent business insurance covers same.

As our service diversifies and expands, we continue to adapt to the needs of the service users and ensure that the care and support is truly shaped around them.

The above mentioned duties are not exhaustive and the post holder will be required to carry out other duties as and when necessary. It should be noted that stated duties or location associated with the post may change to meet the future needs of the organisation.

Criteria:

Essential:

  • 2 Years paid employment in a learning disability or mental health setting and a Degree in Psychology

    OR

  • 2 Years paid employment with supervisory experience and a level 5 diploma in Leadership and Management for health and social care

    OR

  • Understand of the of mental health/learning disabilities/autism and a professional Qualification in:

– Nursing

– Social Work

– Allied Health Profession

– Foundation degree in Health and Social Care

– BTEC Level 5 HND in Health and Social Care

– QCF Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care or equivalent

– BTEC Level 4 HNC in Healthcare Practice / Social and Community Work

– Masters in Behavioural Analysis Special Educational Needs

– Teaching Qualification

Required Criteria

  • 2 years experience in learning disability,mental health or behaviours that challenge
