Job summary
We are looking for two Higher Statistical Officers to join our growing Analytics team at Companies House.
These posts are an opportunity to join our Analytics division, where you will use data analysis techniques to develop new analytical outputs and overhaul existing work. We are making fundamental changes to how analysis is performed in Companies House and this is an exciting time to join us! You will be able to contribute to our fundamental approach to analytical work and make a lasting organisational change. Recent and upcoming legislative reform is changing the way in which we operate, driving demand for good quality data insights to show the impact of these changes and aid decision making. Our analytical teams have access to a new Cloud Data Platform, which is allowing us to analyse data in brand new ways.
Our Analytics teams are within our Data Directorate. We are recruiting into our Corporate Performance and Statistics teams. As an analyst in one of these areas, you would be responsible for the development of new data products for internal or external users. This work requires strong data analysis and dissemination skills, creative vision and attention to detail. This team is part of a busy function so the ability to prioritise work will be key as will engaging with stakeholders.

Job description
The successful candidate will:
- Use data analysis skills to develop and maintain data products that demonstrate how we as an organisation are performing from a strategic and operational perspective, including against policy objectives. This would include extracting data from the Cloud Data Platform, conducting exploratory data analysis using appropriate analytical software, and visualising/presenting insights to customers. Quality assurance of analysis produced through peer review.
- Use data dissemination skills to report on key performance metrics across Companies House. This could include building and maintaining our corporate reporting products in Power BI.
- Deliver short-term analytical projects to inform core objectives across Companies House. Completing and taking ownership of analysis to answer stakeholder questions. This includes requirements gathering and data collection/extraction through to presenting and disseminating insights from the data.
- Develop excellent working relationships with stakeholders within and outside the team. Working with stakeholders to ensure metrics accurately represent operational/organisational realities. Explain analytical concepts and methodology in a digestible way for non-technical colleagues and influence stakeholders in appropriate data usage.
- Contribute towards analytical best practice. Work should be aligned with best practice standards set out by the Government Analysis Function and Government Statistical Service (where relevant). Proactively look for ways to improve our analytical processes.

We are looking for the following skills, experience, qualifications and membership which will be assessed at sift and interview.

Qualifications and Membership
Candidates must have at least one of the following:
- A first- or second-class honours degree (2:2 minimum) in a numerate subject containing taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Psychology, Geography).
- A higher degree, e.g. an MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar).
- Have worked in a statistical/data science field and are able to demonstrate continuous professional development (via a CPD Logbook) in statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree/HND (level five).
- Have achieved a level four apprenticeship including at least two years in a statistical/data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate continuous professional development in statistics/data analysis (via a CPD logbook signed off by a manager or mentor who are members of the statistical profession).
Applicants who are not already members of the Government Statistician Group (GSG) will be required to do an online test as part of the application process to join the GSG.
Experience
We are looking for someone who has:
- Practical experience in applying data analysis techniques using statistical programming languages (e.g. R, Python, SQL).
- The ability to prioritise work and deliver outputs to deadlines in a context of changing business needs.
- Experience of taking the leading role in a team, with the ability to overcome challenges and ensure delivery of quality business outcomes.
- The ability to develop in-depth knowledge of complex administrative data sources.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex analysis to non-technical stakeholders.
- A degree in a numerate discipline or equivalent professional experience.

Government Statistician Group test
- In order to progress through the sift stage, applicants will be asked to confirm (and provide evidence) that they are GSG badged or are willing to complete an online statistics test. You must successfully pass this test (as well as provide sufficient evidence of the sift criteria listed above) to progress to interview stage.
- Once your application have been sifted, you will be invited (via email) to complete the GSS online multiple-choice test. This is a timed test and must be completed and submitted within 7 days to be considered for the next stage of the process. You are encouraged to try the mock tests before attempting the real test.
- Please ensure you inform us ahead of the test if you require any reasonable adjustments to be considered.
- Guidance for the test will be available when you are invited to take the test. The tests are administered online and accessed via the CS Jobs website.
- Please note: If you are already a member of the GSG, you are exempt from sitting the online test. To prevent your application being rejected please ensure you answer this question in your application form, when prompted.
Interview
- Successful candidates from the sift stage will be invited to attend a virtual interview, which will conducted using Microsoft Teams.
- We use a blended interview technique, allowing us to find out more about you.
- We use the Success Profile framework and at interview we will use Success Profiles assessing the Behaviours and Technical Skills listed in the advert.
- As part of your interview, you will be asked to complete a data presentation exercise. This will be assessing Technical Skill: Disseminating and presenting information effectively. You’ll have 30 minutes before your interview to work on this before the panel join the call for you to present your ideas/findings, and then move onto the Technical and Behaviour questions. Details of the presentation exercise will be shared at the beginning of your interview, on the Teams call (this will be invigilated by a member of the recruitment team).
- A reserve list may be held for period of up to 12 months from which further appointments can be made.
