Job Summary

Main Purpose of Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a newly established laboratory in Belfast, created as part of our ongoing business expansion. As the on-site lead, the Assistant Lab Manager will be responsible for independently managing the daily operations of the lab, ensuring smooth workflow, compliance with safety and quality standards, and effective team coordination. The role requires a technically competent and confident individual who can operate autonomously while maintaining close communication with the remote Lab Manager.

Key Responsibilities

– Independently manage day-to-day lab operations and workflow across all shifts, ensuring production targets and quality standards are met.

– Provide on-site leadership, guidance, and technical support to the lab team.

– Oversee semen assessment, media preparation, operation of flow cytometry sorters, and processing/freezing of semen samples.

– Ensure full compliance with CBL health & safety directives, SOPs, and industry biosecurity and health regulations.

– Maintain data integrity and traceability across all lab systems and processes.

– Perform and oversee routine QC testing including QA of data processes to ensure product integrity.

– Monitor and maintain facility standards, ensuring all areas are clean, safe, hygienic and operational using laboratory best practices.

– Manage consumable stock levels, placing orders and ensuring availability of supplies.

– Monitor equipment functionality, perform basic maintenance, and escalate issues as needed. Arrange service and equipment maintenance as required.

– Identify training needs and support the development, engagement and recognition of lab staff to maximise performance.

– Communicate regularly with the remote Lab Manager, escalating any issues or deviations.

– Cascade production targets and provide live feedback to staff on technical performance metrics.

– Contribute to shift planning, team meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Skills and Attributes

– Strong technical competence with laboratory equipment, including flow cytometry sorters.

– Experience in troubleshooting and maintaining lab operations independently.

– High personal standards, accuracy, and a methodical approach to problem-solving.

– Confidence with IT systems and lab interfaces.

– Ability to lead a team while working autonomously and taking individual responsibility.

– Commercial awareness and biological aptitude, ideally with experience in sperm and AI biology.

Desirable Skills

– Previous experience in a biology-based laboratory and basic lab skills.

– Knowledge of flow cytometry principles.

– Experience in a commercial production environment.

Hours

Monday to Friday – 8.30am to 5pm but with flexibility to cover staff absences if necessary for rotating shifts:
