Assistant Financial Controller – Newtownabbey

£55,000 – £60,000 | Permanent | Full Time

Reed is partner with a thriving, high-growth commercial client in Newtownabbey, in the appointment of a commercially experienced Assistant Financial Controller.

The Assistant Financial Controller supports the Financial Controller in managing the group’s financial operations, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting. This role plays a key part in overseeing accounting processes, maintaining strong internal controls, leading month-end activities, and supporting the overall finance function. The Assistant Financial Controller often acts as a second-in-charge within the finance team.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Financial Reporting & Control – Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Month-End & Year-End Close – Lead and coordinate key parts of the month-end closing process.
  • Management Accounting & Analysis – Prepare management reports, including variance analysis, KPIs, and performance commentary.
  • Team Leadership & Support – Supervise and mentor junior members of the finance team (e.g., accountants, AP/AR colleagues).
  • Compliance & Governance – Ensure timely and accurate completion of tax obligations (e.g. VAT, payroll tax, corporation tax).
  • Process Improvement – Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and improve efficiency.

About you!

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial controls.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, financial analysis).
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., SAGE Intacct, SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Dynamics).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred

  • Professional accounting qualification (CIMA, ACCA, ACA) or working toward completion.
  • 7+ years’ experience in financial accounting, audit, or similar roles.
  • Experience in leading or mentoring junior staff.
