The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated individual who is keen to play a key role in shaping how the transmission grid in Northern Ireland will evolve to support the transformation of the power system and enable the transition to a low carbon energy future in Northern Ireland.

As a Power System Planning Engineer, you will report to the Head of Networks and carry out technical analysis of the power system and optioneering of grid solutions for connections and network reinforcement projects in a coordinated, efficient and economic manner that meets the needs of Northern Ireland into the future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identifying future power system needs and possible solutions by carrying out power system analysis such as steady state load flow, voltage, short circuit and transient stability.
  • Developing and appraising network reinforcement options across multiple criteria including technical, cost and environment, recommending the optimal solution.
  • Carrying out benefit assessments.
  • Assessing the optimal methods for connecting new generation, demand and enabling technologies to the transmission system.
  • Using power system modelling software such as PSS/E, PowerFactory or similar.
  • Liaising with customers, working closely with NIE Networks to deliver network reinforcement and customer connection solutions.
  • Building strong and effective relationships with key stakeholders such as NIE Networks, the Utility Regulator and relevant government departments.
  • Identifying and implementing efficiencies in existing processes and policies.
  • Writing robust technical reports and governance papers and communicating these clearly to internal and external stakeholders.

What You’ll Need
Joining SONI as a Power System Planning Engineer, you’ll need:

Essential:

  • University degree in engineering, or other relevant equivalent degree, with a minimum of 2 years relevant post graduate experience.
  • Ambition to develop experience in power systems studies, including supporting the development of a transmission network to deliver net zero emissions.
  • Be experienced in, or with knowledge of power system analysis such as steady state load flow, voltage and short circuit analysis.
  • Ability to solve complex problems in a fast collaborative environment, demonstrating strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work well within a team with flexibility in approach, including a strong ability to work under own initiative and to tight deadlines.
  • Encompass strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on high quality report writing and ability to communicate technical matters clearly and effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Electrical Engineering degree.
  • Proven understanding/good technical knowledge of the Northern Irish power system.
  • Proficiency in performing power system analysis with tools such as PSSE and PowerFactory.
  • Experience working in the electricity industry.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry.
  • Advanced level Excel skills for data analysis.
  • Experience in Python coding.
